Boaters Advised of Potential Impacts to South Thompson River Buoy System

Kamloops, BC – August 15, 2023 – The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) is once again reminding boaters to use extreme caution when navigating the South Thompson River Buoy System. Water levels in the South Thompson remain historically low for this time of year and are continuing to recede.

Boaters may notice sand bars and exceptionally low waters in locations that they have not previously seen on the South Thompson and Thompson rivers. The TNRD is closely monitoring the positions of navigation river buoys, and where needed buoys are being repositioned due to receding waters.

The public continues to be advised that navigation buoys on the river channel are not under continuous observation and, at any time, may be subject to damage or dislocation. As a result, boaters are asked to not rely solely on these aids for navigation, and to use local knowledge when possible.

The TNRD is responsible for maintenance of the Navigation Buoy System along the South Thompson and Thompson rivers. The TNRD does not operate any access points on these rivers. For information on public access points to the river, please refer to local service providers.
