Community Water System Customers Encouraged to Conserve Water

Kamloops, BC – August 10, 2023 – No emergency conservation measures are currently in place for Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) Community Water Systems, as local conditions for these water sources remain viable. However, customers of the 11 TNRD Community Water Systems are being encouraged to voluntarily reduce water consumption where possible during the current drought conditions that are being experienced.

“We thank Community Water System customers who have already decided to voluntarily cut down their water consumption in response to these conditions. This is beneficial for the environment, leads to personal cost savings for customers and less wear and tear on infrastructure,” said Tyrone McCabe, TNRD Manager of Utility Services. “While we are not issuing enforceable conservation measures at this time, we know there are benefits if customers are able to curb their usage where possible.”

Conservation efforts within TNRD Community Water Systems have improved thanks to a project to install water meters for all connections, which was fully completed as of Spring 2022. The near real-time reporting capability of the water meters has allowed system leaks to be quickly identified and isolated, leading to significant improvements in water conservation. Additionally, water metering ensures consumer accountability and fair billing, and ensures customers are more aware of usage.

Community Water System customers are reminded that seasonal watering restrictions remain in effect. Even-numbered properties may water on even days and odd-numbered properties may water on odd days, and watering is prohibited between 11 am and 6 pm daily for all properties.

The TNRD owns and operates 11 Community Water Systems, all of which were constructed within communities and later acquired by the TNRD upon request. These small water systems range in size, from approximately 16 connections to approximately 290 connections. The TNRD adheres to a Water Conservation Plan for its water systems.

The majority of rural properties in TNRD Electoral Areas are on private wells or other private water systems not operated by the TNRD. Although the TNRD does not have authority over these systems, these users are encouraged to also implement water conservation measures due to the drought conditions throughout the Thompson-Nicola region.
