TNRD to Observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Kamloops, BC – September 29, 2023 – The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) will observe the third annual National Day for Truth on Reconciliation on September 30, 2023. Residents are also encouraged to take this time to recognize the legacy of residential schools and their impacts on Indigenous communities.

The TNRD fully recognizes the importance of reconciliation with its Indigenous neighbours, and acknowledges that TNRD boundaries reside on the territory of 25 First Nations. The TNRD is committed to growing relationships with neighbouring First Nations, and is focused on taking sincere actions towards meaningful progress.

The TNRD Board of Directors has included reconciliation in its Strategic Priorities in the 2023-2026 Strategic Plan. As part of the Board’s priority of Relationships and Reconciliation, the TNRD focuses on projects with a lens on Indigenous culture, processes, and reconciliation, and developing stronger relationships and partnerships with First Nations based on trust, mutual respect, and working cooperatively on shared goals. Earlier this week, many TNRD staff took part in a group discussion with Nathan Mathew, former Kukpi7 (Chief) of Simpcw in the North Thompson. During this session, Mathew spoke of the history of Indigenous peoples in this region and historical wrongdoings against Indigenous peoples. Mathew also spoke of fostering reconciliation, mutual respect, and a shared future.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the children who never returned home and the survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is vital to reconciliation. To learn more, click here.
