TNRD Electoral Area Residents Invited to Open Houses on Wildfire Resiliency

Kamloops, BC – October 3, 2023 – The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD), in conjunction with Forsite Consultants, will be hosting a series of open houses during the month of October to provide information on wildfire resiliency planning in the TNRD’s 10 Electoral Areas.

The TNRD has selected Forsite Consultants to create a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan (CWRP) for each TNRD Electoral Area. The objective of each open house will be to inform residents that a CWRP is being created and what each CWRP will do. Other objectives of these open houses will be to educate residents on the risk of wildfire to their homes and property, and to seek insights from residents on the perceived wildfire risk in their area.

Each open house take place from 4 pm to 7 pm with a presentation at 6:30 pm during each event. The schedule for each open house is between October 10 and 30, 2023, as follows:

  • October 10, 2023: Savona Community Hall (Electoral Area “J”)
  • October 11, 2023: Blue River Community Hall (Electoral Area “B”)
  • October 12, 2023: Dutch Lake Community Centre (Electoral Area “A”)
  • October 16, 2023: Heffley Creek Community Hall (Electoral Area “P”)
  • October 17, 2023: Little Fort Community Hall (Electoral Area “O”)
  • October 18, 2023: 70 Mile Community Hall (Electoral Area “E”)
  • October 24, 2023: Lower Nicola Community Hall (Electoral Area “M” & “N”)
  • October 25, 2023: Ashcroft Hub (Electoral Area “I”)
  • October 30, 2023: Pritchard Community Hall (Electoral Area “L”)

Electoral Area residents are encouraged to attend one of the open houses and to drop in at anytime during the session. Residents can ask questions in person, or send related questions to tnrdcwrp@forsite.ca.

CWRPs will guide wildfire risk reduction work within each TNRD Electoral Area and support the seven disciplines of FireSmart to help communities address the threat of wildfire: education, emergency planning, vegetation management, legislation, development, interagency cooperation, and cross-training. Further, CWRPs are required prior to applying to many grant funding opportunities related to FireSmart activities.

Separately, residents are reminded about the importance of maintaining a FireSmart property, which will dramatically increase resistance to wildfire. In many cases, FireSmart activities are surprisingly easy to do. For more information, visit: tnrd.ca/firesmart.
