Referendum for Monte Creek Fire Protective Service

Kamloops, BC – April 29, 2022 – On Saturday, May 28, 2022, qualified electors within Electoral Area “P” and Electoral Area “L” of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) will be eligible to vote in the Monte Creek Fire Protection Service Referendum.

The proposed service would result in a new fire department that would offer structural fire protection to homes and businesses in the Monte Creek area. This service would include the construction of a new fire hall, purchase of a fire truck, purchase of firefighting equipment, and recruitment of volunteer firefighters.

“I am enormously pleased that we have come up with the means to bring the possibility of fire service to the Monte Creek, Del Oro and Lafarge areas within the reach of the Pritchard Volunteer Fire Department,” stated Ken Gillis, TNRD Board Chair and Electoral Area “L” Director. “I encourage people to take advantage of the opportunity to vote in the upcoming referendum.”

Mel Rothenburger, Electoral Area “P” Director, added: “This is a big decision for residents of Monte Creek and a large part of the area on the north side of the South Thompson. Whether those within the proposed service area are in favour or opposed, it’s important for them to get out and vote.”

A public information session was hosted by TNRD staff on September 28, 2021, at the Pritchard Community Hall. The meeting was well attended by area residents, and a straw poll indicated that residents supported a referendum being held. On February 24, 2022, TNRD staff were directed by the Board of Directors to initiate a referendum.

Qualified electors will have two options to vote in person:

  1. Advance Voting Day: Wednesday, May 18, 2022, 8 am – 8 pm, TNRD Civic Building 4th Floor, 300-465 Victoria St., Kamloops, BC
  2. General Voting Day: Saturday, May 28, 2022, 8 am – 8 pm, BC Livestock Office, 10145 Dallas Dr., Kamloops, BC

Mail ballot voting will be available as well.
