In British Columbia, general Local Government Elections have been held every three years. The next Local Government Election will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2011.
In the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, this involves the election of ten Electoral Area Directors, one from each of the ten Electoral Areas: “A” (Wells Gray Country), “B” (Thompson Headwaters), “E” (Bonaparte Plateau), “I” (Blue Sky Country), “J” (Copper Desert Country), “L”, “M”, “N”, “O” (Lower North Thompson) and “P” (Rivers and the Peaks). If there is only one candidate for the office of Electoral Area Director, no election is necessary and the candidate will be automatically declared elected by acclamation.
Elections are conducted according to the rules and regulations set out in the Local Government Act, which governs local government elections throughout B.C.
GENERAL VOTING DAY (GVD):
GENERAL VOTING DAY will be open to qualified electors on November 19, 2011
between the hours of 8:00 am and 8:00 pm at the TNRD Offices, 4th Floor, 465 Victoria Street,
Kamloops, BC, and also at the following locations:
- Electoral Area "A" (Wells Gray Country)
- Electoral Area “B” (Thompson Headwaters)
- Electoral Area "E" (Bonaparte Plateau)
- Electoral Area "I" (Blue Sky Country)
- Electoral Area “J” (Copper Desert Country)
- Electoral Area “L”
- Electoral Area “M”
Notice of Nominations
NOMINATION PACKAGES must be received by the Chief Election Officer at the Thompson-Nicola Regional District Offices @ 4th Floor – 465 Victoria Street, Kamloops, B.C. V2C 2A9 between the hours of 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 4, 2011 and 4:00 p.m., Friday, October 14, 2011, excluding Statutory holidays and weekends. Nomination packages that identify all of the requirements are now available and can be obtained by contacting the Thompson-Nicola Regional District Office. Nomination packages are also available here
Nomination documents may be obtained from the Chief Election Officer or the Deputy Chief Election Officer at the Thompson-Nicola Regional District Office in Kamloops, our website www.tnrd.ca or from the municipal offices in Ashcroft, Barriere, Cache Creek, Chase, Clearwater, Clinton, Logan Lake, Lytton, Merritt, or Sun Peaks. Packages will also be available at the Blue River Library (hours of operation: Tues., Sat., 1:00pm-5:00pm; Wed., 10:00am – 2:00 pm, Thurs., 3:00pm-7:00pm).
Qualifications for Office
A person is qualified to be nominated, elected, and to hold office as a member of local government if they meet the following criteria:
- A person who is, or will on November 19, 2011 be age 18 or older
- A Canadian citizen
- A resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months before the day nomination papers are filed
- Not disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in British Columbia or from being nominated for, being elected to, or holding office

Voting Day Only Registration
The TNRD does NOT use a VOTERS LIST.
All Electors (Resident and Non-Resident) will be required to produce two (2) documents, at least one (1) of which must contain the applicants signature, providing evidence of their identity and place of residency; any two (2) of the following will be acceptable:
- a BC drivers license;
- a BC identification card issued by the motor vehicle office;
- an owner's certificate of insurance and vehicle license issued by ICBC;
- a BC care card or gold care card;
- a Social Insurance card;
- Native Status Card issued by the Department of Indian Affairs;
- a citizenship card issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada;
- a real property tax notice;
- a credit card or debit card, or
- a utility bill;
Non-Resident Electors will be required to provide evidence of ownership in the real property and the written consent of a majority of the other property owners (if any) that they are entitled to register for the jointly owned property. If there is more than one registered owner of real property, either as joint tenants or tenants in common, only one of those individuals may register as a non-resident property elector.
Evidence of ownership shall be any of the following;
- state of title certificate;
- registered agreement for sale;
- property tax notice (last); or
- property assessment notice (last)
Qualifying to Vote
In order to vote, an elector must be eligible either as a resident Elector, or Non-Resident Elector, the requirements of which are as follows:
1. Resident Elector:
- must be age 18 or older on General Voting Day;
- must be a Canadian citizen;
- must have been a resident of British Columbia for at least six (6) months immediately preceding General Voting Day;
- must be a resident of the Electoral Area for at least 30 days immediately preceding General Voting Day;
- must not be disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or be otherwise disqualified by law.
2. Non-Resident Elector:
- must not be entitled to register as a resident elector of the Electoral Area;
- must be age 18 or older on General Voting Day;
- must be a Canadian citizen;
- must have been a resident of British Columbia for at least six (6) months immediately preceding General Voting Day;
- must be a registered owner of real property in the Electoral Area, either as joint tenants or tenants in common for at least 30 days immediately preceding General Voting Day;
- must not be disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or be otherwise disqualified by law.
Should an election by voting be required, GENERAL VOTING DAY will be SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2011. Voting places for each electoral area will be identified in subsequent notices. ADVANCE VOTING OPPORTUNITIES will be held at the Thompson-Nicola Regional District Offices @ 300 - 465 Victoria Street, Kamloops, B.C. V2C 2A9 (and other areas to be identified in subsequent Notices).
