      Mapping Services & GIS Overview

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District use geographic information system (GIS) technology for land inventory, land use planning, emergency management, resource management and a host of other applications. Our goal is to promote and facilitate the use of geographic or spatial information to support the decision-making process.

      What is a GIS?

“Geographic information system (GIS) is a computer system capable of capturing, storing, analyzing, and displaying geographically referenced information; that is, data identified according to location. Practitioners also define a GIS as including the procedures, operating personnel, and spatial data that go into the system. The power of a GIS comes from the ability to relate different information in a spatial context and to reach a conclusion about this relationship. A GIS can reveal important information that leads to better decision making.”
